Introducing the UNESCO Chair on Education for Peace, Social Justice and Global Citizenship

This UNESCO Chair seeks to further understanding of the challenges facing education for peace, social justice and global citizenship in a world of rising inequality and international tension. Building on Kyushu University’s research strengths, and in collaboration with partners across Asia and beyond, it promotes research, postgraduate training and scholarly exchange with a view to: rethinking education’s purposes in the light of technological change and environmental crisis; critically reevaluating its role in shaping identity and civic consciousness; and investigating the implications of intensifying credentialism for social justice and sustainability. In pursuing these aims, we seek to contribute to achievement of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, especially those pertaining to Quality Education, Reduction of Inequalities and the Promotion of Peaceful and Inclusive Societies for Sustainable Development.

Education

Our mission also includes building capacity amongst young researchers within Japan, across Asia and beyond, investigating the role of education in fostering peace, social justice and global citizenship. We are working to intensify collaboration in postgraduate teaching with our established partners, and to further extend our international partnerships in education as well as research. Related activities include student and faculty exchanges, intensive courses and workshops (online or face-to-face) and, where possible, the establishment of double degree programmes. We welcome enquiries or suggestions for collaboration through our contact form.
